CBD for Brain Health:Change and Growth

Written by: Genevieve R. Moore PhD

  • How does your brain heal from depression?
  • How does CBD stimulate neuroplasticity?
  • Should you use CBD for brain health?

In our last article, we talked about the emerging evidence that CBD could help with some forms of depression. Although we don’t have enough evidence yet to recommend CBD for depression, this research has led to some important discoveries into how CBD impacts the brain. CBD’s potential for encouraging neurons to grow and form new connections is promising not just for depression, but for many aspects of brain health.

How do brains recover from depression?

In order to find a path to recovery, it’s important to first ask what depression does to our brains. When researchers ask this question, one of their most consistent findings is that the hippocampus, a small region buried deep within your brain, shrinks in people who are depressed.

The hippocampus is a crucial part of what makes you, “You.” It is key for our abilities to learn, experience emotions, and form new memories. And when it shrinks, it’s not just linked to depression – it’s linked to stress and illnesses like Alzheimer’s as well.

Thankfully, this crucial region of the brain is also one of the more resilient regions. The neurons in the hippocampus can form new connections, known as “neuroplasticity.” The hippocampus can even grow new neurons, known as “neural regeneration.”

Although people like to assume that antidepressant drugs like SSRIs help depression by boosting serotonin levels, there are some serious flaws in that theory. Importantly, SSRIs often take weeks to start working even though they increase serotonin levels immediately. So, serotonin is not the true key to happiness.

The updated thinking is that antidepressants might actually work by stimulating neuroplasticity and/or neural regeneration in the hippocampus. And these processes, like a home renovation project, don’t just happen overnight. This is why researchers believe there’s a delay before medications can help improve a person’s depression.

However, medications aren’t the only way to stimulate neural regeneration. Exercise, a good diet, meditation, sex, and social connections can all help brains form new connections. And, according to some researchers, CBD might also stimulate neuroplasticity and neural regeneration.

How does CBD affect the hippocampus?

When it comes to what CBD does within your body, this little molecule is a multi-tasker. It affects more than 65 different types of targets, and some of those targets have also been linked to neuroplasticity and neural regeneration in the hippocampus.

Here are some of CBD’s different targets that could have a role in helping your brain form new connections:

      • Endocannabinoids: CBD can help increase the body’s production of natural endocannabinoids, like anandamide. When tested in mice, CBD stimulated neuron growth after it increased levels of anandamide in the hippocampus.
      • Serotonin receptors: CBD binds to the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor, similar to some popular antianxiety medications. Scientists now believe that one of the main reasons serotonin-related drugs work is through their ability to stimulate new neural connections in the hippocampus.
      • Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF): Some studies show that CBD helps increase levels of the BDNF protein in rodent brains. BDNF has a direct role in helping neurons survive and form new connections in the hippocampus.

Should you use CBD for brain health?

If you choose to incorporate CBD into your brain health regimen or as part of a long-term recovery plan, pay careful attention to your usage and track your mood over time. There is a chance that CBD will not be a good fit for your body chemistry, so start slow and keep in mind that more CBD is not always better.

We live in a world where many of us are constantly exposed to stress and isolation, both factors which contribute to hippocampus shrinkage. No matter what path you take for dealing with these problems, you will probably see the best results if you take a multi-pronged approach to brain health. In addition to helping your brain’s neuroplasticity with exercise, diet, supplements and other tactics, you can incorporate self-improvement books, gratitude practices, and other sources of inspiration to help send your brain down a new, brighter path.

Depression is a serious illness that you should never battle alone. If you think you have depression and haven’t talked with a trusted medical professional yet, that should always be the first step in your path towards recovery. Also, consult with your doctor before changing your treatment plan or taking new supplements - CBD included.

For your body and mind, we wish you the best on your quest for emotional healing.
